Norfolk Bomb Threat: Another 9/11 Attack? Tunnels Closed For Inspection, Reopened After Bomb Scare Timeframe Elapsed [VIDEO & REPORT]

A Norfolk bomb threat had everyone in Norfolk, Virginia worried, leading to the mandatory inspections of all trucks and police officers to be on full alert, Inquisitr reported Wednesday.

The Norfolk bomb threat - an alleged threat amid the 9/11 attack commemoration - had Virginia officers, Homeland Security, and FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force members on full alert as they carried out a mandatory inspection on all trucks passing through the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel and the Monitor-Merrimac Tunnel Wednesday.

Examiner reported that the Norfolk bomb threat was made Wednesday morning, prompting local officers to carry out inspections in and around the two Norfolk tunnels.

State police said both trucks and commercial vehicles were required to undergo inspection during the timeframe the threat has stipulated and even after the bomb scare hours had timed out, to ensure public safety.

Both tunnels were reopened this afternoon, allowing the traffic through at around 3:15 p.m. today, after local and state police along with the FBI were satisfied that the bomb threat timeframe was over.

Reports stated that a specialized dog teams were dispatched for the Norfolk bomb threat, and that the task force worked "excellently and efficiently together."

Authorities issued a follow-up statement after the intended 9/11 bomb threat saying: "At approximately 7:50 a.m., Wednesday (Sept. 11, 2013), Virginia State Police received a phone call regarding a bomb threat within the Hampton Roads region. The threat included a timeframe for the threat to occur, which has since expired. At this time, no incidents have been reported anywhere in the Hampton Roads region.

As a precautionary measure, state police immediately stepped up patrols within the region as well as initiated commercial vehicle inspections along Interstates 64 and 664. For the safety of the motoring public, the inspections will continue throughout the day due to it being the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

State police have also been working with federal and local law enforcement to evaluate the threat, and to supplement patrol and inspection resources. The incident remains under investigation.Due to the nature of today's anniversary, state police across the Commonwealth have been on heightened alert for the safety of the Commonwealth and its citizens."

No reports on the exact nature of the Norfolk bomb threat has been released as of late, and full details on where it originated is yet to be confirmed by the authorities.

The Hampton Roads Transit officials relayed a message via Twitter saying, "Please be suspicious of anything unattended on HRT's vehicles or property. Tell a cop, or call HRT Safety and Security at 757-222-6134."
